Things They Say

The Ferocious hunter waiting for its next prey

Excuses auto-drivers of Chennai give to justify the double-(at times triple, at times even more than that)-the-normal-rate fares for the great service they provide to their nation (Chennai-istan) :

4-7am: "Early morning, Saar.."

7-11am: "Morning time, Saar..no return sawari" (!!)

11am-4pm: "Afternoon-time, Saar.."

4-7pm: "Evening time, Saar..rush hour heavy traffic..."

9pm-2am: "See the time, Saar..." (I guess by that time they get too tired to let us know what time of the day it is.)

I've never boarded an auto between 2-4am, so I can't really tell you what they tell then. But, to tell the truth, I'm rather happy not to have experienced that. I'd rather spend those two hours on the streets than ask one of these guys "How much?". I have a mild heart-condition, you know.

Oh, and the best one...happened today at around 7.30pm when I wanted to come from Saidapet to Insti; the autowalah straightaway asked only 100 bucks, and this is what I got as a prompt explanation (I believe this is what they say during 7-9pm):

"Happy hour, Saar..." (!!!!!!!!)

P.S.: Thanks to this fellow for capturing Chennai in its true colors (well..to a certain extent).

  • I once happnd to travel in the 2-4 am zone. I was asked 400 bucks to the insti. The distance was ~20km. I was trying to explain tht I could reach hyderabad at a lesser price, but even before I said 2 words, he turned his back and went back to sleep in the back seat....

And not just the auto walas, this is the same story with coolie walas as well. Each time I came to Chennai, I used to pray to God tht no coolie wala came behind me.This always happnd with me. As soon as i get down, they start pestering me, i try to explain to them tht i dont need a coolie but they do not stop following, then i start to ignore them. and then i have to listen to all their abuses, they say, 'why didnt u tell me bfore saar tht u didnt need a coolie? why did u waste so much of my time? now i wont get any customers, who will pay me money now??'

I simply cannot comprehen how ppl can be so utterly shameless. They lie so blatantly just to make a few bucks more.

I do not say tht all chennai auto walas nd coolies r bad, but it is true of most of them.

I once got my comp frm chennai to hyd in train. When i got down at hyd and the coolie wala asked me 30 bucks to take it out, honestly, a few tears spontaneously popped out of my eyes for him. I wanted to tell him, go to chennai, u wud get 300 bucks for the same job, but then i didnt want him to bcome like a chennai guy, so didnt tell him nething. I bargained for 25 bucks and got the work done(devil me...)
